Adrián Arguedas Ruano was born in Barrio del Carmen on March 18, 1968, although he grew up and lived in Barva de Heredia, where his family has resided for many generations. His experiences with his great uncle, who crafted traditional folk masks, had a major influence on him and ultimately led to Ruano choosing a career in art.

Every August, his native town of Barva de Heredia, Costa Rica celebrates a festival dedicated to San Bartholomé with masquerade parades. Over the years, Arguedas has hand-crafted his own interpretations of these vibrant oversized heads of giants, witches, skeletons, and clowns, but he is most recognized for his unparalleled work in commemorating the ritual through his raw, multi-colored woodcuts.
