The Space Between

Nüart Gallery presents The Space Between, a two-person exhibition featuring William T. Carson and Emilio Lobato, on view February 28 through April 4, 2026, at 2525 Michigan Ave #B4, Santa Monica, CA 90404.

The exhibition explores the physical and conceptual dimensions of negative space—where light, material, and meaning emerge in the intervals between forms. Through distinct yet complementary practices, Carson and Lobato examine how space itself shapes perception and experience.

Carson’s copper installations investigate illumination as something that emanates from the spaces between elements rather than from a singular object. Working with copper and coal—materials that absorb, reflect, and subtly modulate light—his practice emphasizes restraint and perceptual awareness.

Lobato presents abstracted geometric compositions constructed from vintage electricians’ measuring sticks. These rulers function as metaphorical tools referencing the human impulse to measure and quantify experience—from financial value and domestic space to personal milestones and imagined futures.

Together, the artists create a quiet dialogue grounded in what lies beyond immediate visibility, where layers of history and embedded meaning reside within the materials themselves—existing in the space between object and observer, measurement and intuition, surface and depth.
