Opening Reception: Saturday, July 12, 2025, 11AM-7 PM
The Robert Berman Gallery is pleased to announce REDUX 1995–2025: William S. Burroughs, opening July 12, 2025, at Bergamot Station Arts Center. This exhibition revisits the 1995 exhibition “Concrete and Buckshot”, a presentation of Burroughs' visual work—originally mounted in collaboration with Track 16 Gallery—and repositions it within a new framework alongside previously seen, unseen and newly added works.
The 1995 exhibition originated through Robert Berman’s close relationship with Robert Sobieszek, then a curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), who would later become its Chief Deputy Director. That same year, Sobieszek curated the now-renowned “Ports of Entry: William S. Burroughs and the Arts” at LACMA, which helped define Burroughs’ influence on the postwar American avant-garde.
Robert Berman Gallery was one of the first venues to exhibit Burroughs’ paintings in Los Angeles, and now, thirty years later, the gallery presents REDUX—featuring both original works from the 1995 show and a curated selection of additional pieces, including Burroughs’ early 1990s paintings and his complete “Seven Deadly Sins” series. Known for his use of unconventional materials—spray paint, stencils, even shotgun blasts—Burroughs approached visual art with the same subversive energy he brought to literature.
The show is enriched by a photographic tribute to Burroughs, with rare photo silkscreens by Dennis Hopper, and photographs by Christopher Felver, John Colao, and Allen Ginsberg. These works provide a compelling visual narrative around Burroughs' public and private personas.
