NÜART GALLERY - ONE BECOMES ANOTHER

  • NÜART GALLERY 2525 Michigan Avenue, #B4 Santa Monica, CA, 90404 United States (map)

Nüart Gallery presents an exhibition featuring new work by Cara Tomlinson at our Santa Monica location. The exhibition will run from July 13th through August  3rd, 2024 with an opening reception on Saturday, July 13th,  from 4:00 - 6:00 PM, preceded by an artist talk led by critic Shana Nys Dambrot from 3 -  4  PM.

Cara Tomlinson’s work investigates the interactions between human and non-human bodies within ecological systems. Her abstract paintings, drawings, and sculptures reflect on processes of transformation, examining the fluid boundaries between states of being. Tomlinson’s approach, characterized by a lack of preliminary sketches and a reliance on a developed visual language from daily drawing, emphasizes the material properties of paint and its capacity to embody change.

One Becomes Another explores the concept of liminality, where the inanimate becomes animate and vice versa. Through her work, Tomlinson addresses questions of identity, boundaries, and the interconnectedness of life forms. Her paintings act as static representations of dynamic processes, capturing moments of transition and the inherent instability of existence.

Tomlinson’s contributions to contemporary art have been widely recognized, supported by numerous grants, residencies, and exhibitions at notable galleries around the country, affirming her position as a significant figure in the field of abstract art. Amongst these are the Ucross Foundation, Millay Colony for the Arts, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Willapa Bay Artist Residency, Ford Family Foundation Grant, and an Artist Fellowship Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission. She is currently an Associate Professor of Painting at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
