Martiros Adalian, Afternoon, acrylic, oil, spray paint on canvas, 45” x 60”

Lois Lambert Gallery presents Composed Serenity, the most recent exhibition of paintings by Martiros Adalian.

Martiros Adalian is a mixed media artist. He uses acrylic, oil, and spray paint to create a multi-dimensional and multi-textual effect that adds a sense of motion and energy to his pieces.

Adalian is a figurative painter. His work is heavily inspired by Baroque and Renaissance art, as well as his “beautiful family.” Adalian likes to “capture tension in his artworks, suck the air out of the painting and make the viewer feel intrigued by the work.” He wants the viewer to be an intimate observer of his work and feel like they too are being observed. Adalian doesn’t believe that art should be a comfort. He believes it should distress, bother, and illuminate those kinds of feelings.

Adalian’s artwork begins with what he refers to as “digging,” which is his process of going through magazines and online images and later juxtaposing them until he reaches what he needs. Adalian combines this imagery with real-life observations of his family members in order to create the subjects of his paintings.

Martiros Adalian was born in 1972 in Yerevan, Armenia. He started painting when he was three years old. He grew up among a family of artists - his father, uncle, cousins are all artists. Adalian was strongly influenced by his father, Raffi Adalian, and his uncle, Ruben Adalian, both well-known Armenian artists. Adalian graduated from the famed Terlemezian Art College of Yerevan, Armenia and moved to the United States in 1990. Now he splits his time working as a fabric designer and a painter. He has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, and Russia.
