JOAN ROBEY, On Canyon Road #4, plexiglass, latex ink, 32” x 25” x 1/4"

Lois Lambert Gallery presents On Canyon Road, the most recent exhibition of work by artist Joan Robey.

Robey is always searching and experimenting with new mediums. Her newest series, On Canyon Road began in 2019, when she started making prints on sheets of Plexiglas. To create this body of work, Robey first takes photographs at her desert home and prints them on vellum, mimicking the final effect of printing on Plexiglas. Several of these images are then cut, layered, collaged, and taped back together in a crude assemblage. The collages are digitally altered by erasing overlapping lines, editing out parts of images, shifting colors, or enhancing certain areas. Once Robey has created a composition that feels dynamic and somewhat chaotic, the image gets printed on Plexiglass in its final form.

Robey is most interested in the power of basic forms and shapes, and in the idea that each time you look at something, there is always a different visual experience. “Every time I look at one scenario, it’s not the same as the last time I saw it. In trying to see just one thing, I always see more.” For long periods of time, the desert landscape can appear unchanging, as though nothing is really happening. That seeming monotony can be reassuring; but also deceptive. Robey seeks to reflect this juxtaposition and tension in her work. Each image depicts the chaos of all too many versions of reality, isolated in time and space.

Robey immerses viewers in a surreal landscape where shifting colors and collages of elements converge. The resultant image, printed on Plexiglas, creates a visual experience that defies expectations and transports the audience to a world where reality and imagination intermingle.

Joan Robey received her BFA from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Her work is included in several collections, including the Peter Norton Family Trust and Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami. She has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States for twenty years, ranging from exhibitions at the Denver Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, the Orange County Museum, the LA Art Fair, and the Science World museum in Vancouver, Canada. Influenced by the art of Kandinsky, Serra and Nevelson, Robey is most noted for her work with reclaimed and re-used objects.
