Welcome! We've designed this guide to answer all of the most common questions
about site content management, so please read through this entire guide first
before contacting us for content management assistance
The new-and-improved Bergamot Station website is built and managed using Squarespace—a visually-stunning and user-friendly website creation tool. You will need a Squarespace account and an invitation to edit content on this website in order to access the features described below.
When this Squarespace site initially launched, all known editors of bergamotstation.com were sent an invitation to edit the new website. If you haven't received an invitation, please request an invitation here. Once your status as an authorized content manager is confirmed, you will receive a new invitation via email.
Once you click on the link in your invitation, you'll need to sign-in using one of two methods:
Enter your email address and password in the Accept Invitation screen, and click Login:
Click the Create Squarespace Account link below the login button:
On the next screen, enter your name, email address, and password to create your account.
You'll use these credentials to log into the site in the future. Click create account to accept the invitation.
After following either of these methods, you'll be signed-in to the admin side of bergamotstation.com.
To sign-in again, visit http://squarespace.com/login and enter your email + password
Once you've signed-in to Squarespace for bergamotstation.com, you'll see an overview page that looks like this:
Clicking Pages or any of the EDIT buttons will take you to the site index, which lists all Bergamot galleries (including yours!) on the left-hand side:
Each Bergamot gallery is provisioned 1-3 albums—depending on how many exhibitions the gallery runs in parallel. If you would like to request additional Squarespace albums, please fill out this form.
Management of content is super straightforward in Squarespace:
Click on your gallery's name in the site index list (not the thumbnails on the preview page), and an editor page like this will appear:
Upload new images by clicking the + sign or the up-arrow with the dashed box around it
Rearrange existing thumbnails by clicking, holding, and dragging
Only upload images smaller than 1500 pixels on the longest edge to optimize page load times
Please note that individual image titles and captions are not supported by Bergamot's Squarespace theme, but you'll be notified if/when that changes. The album description (described next) is a great place to summarize work displayed in your collection of images.
Click on the gear icon near the album title and you'll reveal a panel for album settings:
Be sure to click SAVE at the bottom of the "Configure Gallery" pane (otherwise your changes won't stick!)
You need to manually set your gallery’s thumbnail in order for it to appear on the site homepage, and you’ll need to reset the thumbnail whenever you update the content in your gallery to feature a new exhibition. This is a new development in the Squarespace template.
Here’s how to set your gallery’s thumbnail (using Richard Heller Gallery as an example):
1. Click on the “Media” link at the top of the "Gallery" pane:
2. Click on the “Add an Image” button and locate the image you’d like to set as the Gallery’s thumbnail:
3. Click on the SAVE button in the bottom of the pane:
Your gallery will now appear on the site homepage.
And that's it for gallery content management! If you'd like to see everything that's possible with Gallery Pages, check out this longer guide from Squarespace.
Squarespace's event functionality is very easy to use and produces a nice clean listing of events with preview images. It replaces the shared Google Calendar previously used to manage events on Bergamotstation.com, so updating the Bergamot Station Google Calendar will NOT update events on the website anymore!
Before we cover the basics of adding and editing events, please keep in mind that events are ONE-TIME (such as exhibition openings, receptions, talks, etc.) and should not be used to represent the full run of an exhibition or set of performances. That's what your gallery pages are for :)
It's super simple! Just click on events in the site nav while in the Squarespace Editor and then on the ADD EVENT button which appears when you mouseover the event list:
That will open an "Add Event" popup, where you can enter the event's title, start date, end date, and brief description:
Do NOT include your gallery's name or address in the description! That happens later in the event-creation process.
Once you've entered the basic info, click on Options in the top of the EDIT EVENT window, and an image upload window will appear:
Click on Add an image, select the image from your computer, and click on APPLY to upload the image. Please make sure your image is smaller than 1500px on the longest edge to optimize page load times.
Once your image is successfully loaded, click on Location in the top of the Edit Event window. Now you'll be able to enter your Gallery's name and address:
Once you've entered your location, click on SAVE (to save the event as a draft) or SAVE & PUBLISH to immediately publish the event for the world to see.
Click on events in the main site nav and then click on MANAGE EVENTS. Hey look, our newly published event is up top!
To edit your event, just mouseover the event and click on the EDIT button.
If you can't find your event in the list, try scrolling all the way to the bottom of the events list, until you see ~ fin ~ . Then scroll back up to the top and your event should appear at the top of the list. This is a known bug in Squarespace, which they'll hopefully resolve sooner than later.
The Explore page is the final piece of the Bergamot website whose content you can influence—but not directly manage. The page contains an interactive map of all Bergamot galleries, and a list of those galleries below the map. While the list of galleries is editable, editing the interactive map is NOT POSSIBLE via Squarespace. And we'd like to avoid inconsistency between the map and the list of galleries below it.
To request a change to the Explore page, please fill out this form, and you'll be emailed once the change has been made. Thanks for your understanding and patience regarding this little speed bump in our otherwise nice and smooth content editing process!
The rest of the site's content (such as learn more) is managed by Bergamot Station, and as a gallery manager you don't need to worry about editing that content.
Hopefully this guide has covered all of your questions about content management on Bergamotstation.com. But if you have any lingering questions, please feel free to ask via this form, and you'll get a response at the earliest possible convenience.
